Quarterly Sentinel Fall 2024

MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR

Space today is Compelling, Competitive and increasingly Confrontational.

Space is compelling and that is no longer a small conversation between a few large companies. It is a big, global conversation that includes satellites, communication, agriculture, weather, pharma and many other industries. This broader interest in space challenges not just our thoughts about space but also the types of hardware and software needed to facilitate new use cases. The pace of space is accelerating. We cannot ignore the announcements we see everyday from companies we know and those we have never heard of. Some of those are also coming from new space faring nations who also want to stake their claim to space.

Commercial and government agencies understand the need for speed in creating, testing and deploying new technologies. It may be as one writer said ‘We need big thinkers with stopwatches’. Companies know that accelerated schedules cannot ignore reliable and resilient results. Gathering resources today means surveying analyzing and choosing advancing technologies to succeed. The need to hire talent at all levels is critical. All entities know that at the end of the day it is the people who create and refine technology and vision the next steps to extract water from the surface of the moon, mine asteroids, and generate the power needed for ongoing satellite operations.

There are many collaborative efforts underway to address some of the big problems ahead. Launch companies continue to build larger vehicles to get all the payloads being created to orbit and beyond. Sustainable space exploration and operations deserve our attention. There are several lunar lander vehicles being built to explore, gather samples and analyze the possibilities for lunar habitation and further exploration.

Colorado entities and partners continue to advance on all fronts. We have the benefit of legacy companies, new companies and our outstanding academic partners and multiple government and military assets to get us to the next level and beyond. There is urgency to many aspects of this conversation, whether it is hypersonics or the exploration and colonization of the moon or the multitude of space debris circling our earth. As we see the challenges, we work to meet them on all fronts thoughtfully and intelligently. We stand ready.

CSBR 2024 Summer Internship Program

This summer, Colorado Space Business Roundtable and aerospace partners teamed up to bring economic opportunity to their hardest-to-reach constituencies, high school and college students. As part of this effort, the CSBR internship team hosted over 60 interns for the ASA/CSBR Internship Program. The high school and college students were recruited from different communities throughout the state to serve as ambassadors to the booming central space corridors of their states, where they had the unique opportunity to meet with prominent figures within space policy and business.

The internship, put on by the Colorado Space Business Roundtable (CSBR) is intended to educate students on the role of the Aerospace industry in the state and how the network of main contractors, suppliers, universities, and business interest groups serve to attract government contracts and economic opportunity to their home states. This is beneficial for the students because it gives them the ability to make connections in industry, but, in the long-term, these types of programs also serve to further strengthen the ties that link the CSBR membership companies to the greater community.

During the 2 week program, one virtual and one in person, event organizers took the trek with the students to nearly 15 businesses large and small. Tour stops included Lockheed Martin, Sierra Space, BAE Systems, United Launch Alliance, University of Colorado Boulder, MSU Denver, Colorado State University, Trimble, Red Canyon Software and Engineering, Buckley Space Force Base, Wings Over the Rockies, Advanced Space, Astroscale, Boeing, Space Command and others.

If you are interested in participating in or learning more about the internship program please contact Lisa Luedtke at lisa.r.luedtke@lmco.com.

Air N Space-A-Palooza and  Internship Graduation

Air N Space-A-Palooza was an experimental learning opportunity aimed to generate career awareness and knowledge of the Aerospace Industry. 25 exhibitors were on site and nearly 730 individuals from the public attended.

The Aerospace Sector Partnership, a public/private partnership, led by Arapahoe/Douglas Works!, identified experimental learning as a priority area to promote career pathways and in-demand skills to meet the needs of the current and future workforce in the industry. Other support partners included City of Centennial, South Metro Denver Chamber, Colorado Space Business Roundtable and Astroscale.

The Wings over the Rockies, exploration of Flight was selected for the event as we were able to secure experimental learning activities like Flight Simulators, learning about flight and a Gyro Ball. The space was also large enough for exhibitors to bring in a CNC mill, Virtual Reality Space Golf, a Drone Soccer competition, and CU Boulder brought in their Drone Catapult.

Air N Space-A-Palooza was federally funded through the Strong Sector, Good Jobs grant using 100% Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act funding.*
